What is NLP?
NLP is the study of excellence. The study of how a person excels in a particular skill or set of skills.

What does this mean?

Everyone has a skill that they excel in. NLP is a tool for accelerated learning. A person who has learnt NLP can choose to model someone with a skill or set of skills and achieve similar results as if they had spent years practicing the same skill

What is the difference between NLP and other techniques for learning behaviours and skills?

NLP since the 70's has evolved a set of tools that are specifically designed for the apprehension of a persons behaviour through the unconscious uptake of their overt behaviours. The difference lays in the succeeding understanding of what the person is doing unconsciously and then building a reputable model of that persons behaviour. NLP provides the practitioner with tools to understand and map out a persons unconscious strategies and behaviours into a format that can be easily taught and learnt by anyone.

Is this all that NLP is, a tool for accelerated learning?

Though NLP started from modelling the skills from three of its original proponents, Milton Erickson M.D. Virginia Satir and Fritz Perls, NLP has left in its wake a trail of tools and techniques that can be applied across the board to any form of human interaction.

This means a person who has learnt NLP can apply these skills into all areas of their life and achieve the results they desire. Commonly today you see NLP being applied to sport, the arts, politics, therapy, sales, leadership, dieting and really anything you can think of.

Where did it come from?

NLP was originally created by Dr. John Grinder and Dr. Richard Bandler in California in the 1970's. John at the time was an assistant professor of linguistics at UCLA and Richard a mathematician.

What does NLP consist of?

NLP consists of many models and techniques that can be applied to all areas of someone's life, from how they relate to their loved ones and working colleagues to implementing the skills, techniques and attitudes for their own personal development and improvement.

Can anyone learn NLP?

Yes. NLP is not about theory, but about practicality, if you can talk about it, it doesn't mean you can do it. NLP is about having the skills and behaviours at the level of habit, that is your skills become a natural part of who you are.

Does this mean I will be more effective in my life?

Effective is a comparative word and difficult to define without a context or scenario. The way to be more effective is the ability to have a wide range of skills that will enable you a greater chance of achieving your outcome. It is about being flexible with your behaviours and noticing if you are achieving your outcome or not. And if not to have the choice to choose another behaviour.

Is choice important in NLP?

Absolutely. Choice is not only important in NLP but in life. If you only have one way of doing something then you are stuck, if you have two ways then you are in a dilemma, with three ways you have choice. NLP provides the tools and mean with which to increase your range of behaviours, thoughts and skills to have choice. To bring you closer to achieving those things you desire.
